Volcanos in Hawaiian Culture

Updated: Sep 15

Volcanoes are central to Hawaiian culture and history, and are considered sacred and alive by Native Hawaiians:

Pele

The Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes, fire, lightning, and wind. She is both feared and revered, and is said to create new lands and reshape the landscape with each eruption.

Halemaʻumaʻu

The home of Pele, which is said to be the body of the volcano.

Lava

Considered to be "Pele's hair", lava is seen as a sacred substance with healing properties. It is used in traditional Hawaiian ceremonies.

Volcanoes as living beings

Native Hawaiians believe volcanoes are alive and have rights and responsibilities, and that they share power and knowledge with humans.

Volcanoes as the Earth's mother

Native Hawaiians consider volcanoes to be like the Earth's mother.

Volcanoes as a reminder of balance

The eruptions of volcanoes serve as a reminder of the delicate balance between humans and nature.

Respect

Visitors to volcanoes are encouraged to respect people chanting, praying, or gathering in ceremonies.

It's important to note that the actions of the foreign geothermal fracking factory have been erasing all of these beliefs for almost 40 years. It's a extreme desecration of all these things listed , and it is why KahuPuna fights so hard to bring geothermal awareness to the world. #aolepgv #freeKilauea

"Hawaiian legends tell that eruptions were caused by Pele, the beautiful but tempestuous Goddess of Volcanoes, during her frequent moments of anger. Pele was both revered and feared; her immense power and many adventures figured prominently in ancient Hawaiian songs and chants. She could cause earthquakes by stamping her feet and volcanic eruptions and fiery devastation by digging with the Pa'oa, her magic stick. An oft-told legend describes the long and bitter quarrel between Pele and her older sister Namakaokahai that led to the creation of the chain of volcanoes that form the islands." -->

"Historically, the island's five volcanoes were considered sacred by the Hawaiian people, and in Hawaiian mythology Halemaʻumaʻu served as the body and home of Pele, goddess of fire, lightning, wind, and volcanoes." -->

Let's help preserve and protect our Hawaiian Culture.

It's been erased long enough in moku o keawe, one of our most sacred areas . Where ALL life springs forth.

The people have been crying out for decades about this ecocide and cultural erasure.

We are awaiting a written ruling still since July 26th , the first hearing of the Hawaii Geothermal Injunction , to stop the sale of kilauea volcano to ormat for another 40 years .

Stay tuned

And please help raise awareness . See the injunction documents and all declarations within proving 40 years of cover ups and corruption . Let's help save our home.

Eye lava you all

Jazzy
