●Keaukaha fight over land deed goes to state Supreme Court: A legal battle over a Keaukaha property, a century-old land deed, and the separation between church and state will go before the Hawaii Supreme Court next week.


"In 1922, the then-Territory of Hawaii sold a roughly 4.5-acre parcel of land in Keaukaha to one Heber J. Grant for $20. Grant, a trustee for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, was given a land patent for the property with the condition that it be used “for Church purposes only” — any other use of the land would void the agreement and revert the land to the Territory of Hawaii. Decades later, that deed to the property — now subdivided into five parcels located at the intersection of Kalanianaole Street and Onekahakaha Road — was transferred between various owners and holding companies until it entered the possession of Hilo Bay Marina, LLC in 2000."



●HCRA: Puna Canoe Club collects 13 medals in Hilo

HILO — Moku O Hawai‘i Ourigger Canoe Racing Association hosted its third long-distance meet of the 2024 season on Saturday in Hilo Bayfront. Exactly 461 paddlers competed, with 233 of them being keiki. Michael O’Shaughnessy was the event’s oldest participant at 79 years old, while Stone Schaber was the youngest at age 9. The event was sponsored by Hui Wa‘a ‘O Waiakea.




●County wants private land for Puna road


"Hawaii County will seize portions of a pair of private properties in lower Puna in order to complete the reopening of Pohoiki Road.


The Department of Public Works intends to begin construction on a four-phase project to restore roads and waterlines cut off during the 2018 Kilauea eruption by the second quarter of this year. While the first of those phases would reopen the stretch of Highway 137 from the Four Corners Intersection to Pohoiki Road, the second phase — which DPW director Steve Pause said is still undergoing design revisions — would restore both upper and lower Pohoiki Road, about 2.4 miles long."
